Was a standout boxer for the C of I from 1957-60. Took home titles at both the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast Collegiate Championships in 1958. A three-time competitor at the U.S. Olympic Trials (1956, 1960, 1964), Spanakos competed for the United States at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Won the 1960 Golden Gloves championship.
