TACOMA, Wash. – A monster effort by the College of Idaho men's swim team netted 11 new NAIA qualifying marks and two school records, as the Yotes sit in third-place heading into the final day of the Logger Invitational at Wallace Pool.
The Coyotes enter Day 3 of the meet with 285 team points – trailing only Whitworth (426) and Concordia-Irvine (345) – sitting ahead of host Puget Sound (253) and Pacific Lutheran (245).
Andrew Clifford set the tone for the Yotes, blitzing the field for a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.54) – shaving six seconds off his seasonal best – while following it up with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, setting a new school record with his time of 46.21 seconds. He also swam the anchor in the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed fourth with a seasonal-best time of 1:26.99.
Hayden Krause also got into the record-breaking act, placing fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, with his time of 2:12.74 the fastest-ever by a Yote and earning a "B" qualifying mark. The transfer also helped the C of I 200-yard medley relay team place second, with their time of 1:35.00, the second-fastest in school history.
Five Yotes established new NAIA auto marks –
Alec Chournos with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.44); both
Mitch Hawley (2:00.22) and
Ian Locke (2:01.17) in the 200-yard butterfly;
Graham Williams in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.94); and
Dylan Osborne in the 50-yard freestyle (21.75).
Osborne also hit one of five Bonus Cuts for Nationals with a time of 47.43 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Matthew Kahlig hit two "B" marks – in the 100-yard freestyle (49.20) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.12);
Brendan Sauer (1:49.17) and
Jake Klassen (1:48.16) hit the "B" in the 200-yard freestyle, with Klassen also placing third in the 200-yard IM (1:59.28).
Day 3 of the meet begins Sunday with 9 a.m. preliminary races.
