CALDWELL, Idaho – Nich Guzzetti scored six goals, as the College of Idaho used a big first half to roll to a 19-9 victory over Portland State in Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League South Division action at Symms Field.
Trading goals over the first 10 minutes of the game, the Coyotes (5-2, 3-1) took advantage of a PSU penalty, with Patrick Erstad scoring during the power play to give C of I a 3-2 lead. The goal started a Yote surge, as Guzzetti and Dillon Green each scored twice during a 6-0 run that helped the hosts take an 11-3 lead at the break.
The Vikings (4-7, 0-4) cut the margin to 13-7 midway through the third quarter on a Leo Burby goal, but Erstad countered with back-to-back strikes and Guzzetti scored two late tallies to put the game away.
Green had four goals and an assist; Erstad had three goals and two assists; and Austin Mendiola had three goals and one assist for the Yotes. V.J. Dahm had 16 saves in the victory.
Burby scored five goals in the loss for PSU.
C of I returns to action tomorrow at noon, hosting Western Oregon.
