CALDWELL, Idaho -
Eric Hornung was announced as a Collegiate Sports communicators Academic All-America team member. He is only the third Yotes men's soccer player to be awarded the prestigious honor and now joins James Collet and Coe Michaelson. Hornung was honored with second team all-NAIA distinction.
The Academic All-America® program, established in 1952 by College Sports Communicators (CSC), is the premier honor recognizing college student-athletes who excel both athletically and academically. The award is reserved for those performing at an elite level in their sport, in the classroom, and their communities. The award spans all NCAA divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges, and Canadian institutions. Only 22 NAIA men's soccer players earn this distinction each year, underscoring its exclusivity.
Athletically, the German forward had a tremendous senior season. He scored nine goals and had four assists. He set the Yotes' record for most points in a game when he scored four goals and assisted three others to tally 11 points on the night. He earned NAIA national player of the week honors for his performance.
In the community, Hornung was an assistant coach for Caldwell High School's boy's soccer team. When he wasn't practicing or playing for C of I, he was assisting with drills and mentoring the team that won the Idaho 6A Boys Soccer State Championship. Making it a weekend to remember, his 11 point game and state title were the same weekend.
Academically, Hornung is an impressive student. He has maintained a 3.93 GPA in pursuit of a business degree. For the summer break, Hornung returned to Fürth, Germany, which is just a short drive from his hometown of Nürnberg. He interned with the academy of SpVgg Greuther Fürth, a club that competes in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of the German professional soccer hierarchy.
