CALDWELL, Idaho – As the 2024 men's soccer season approaches, The College of Idaho's program is poised for another exciting year. Following a historic 2023 season that saw the Yotes finish third in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) and clinch the conference tournament title for the first time in 20 years, they have been predicted to finish second in the upcoming season. With an impressive preseason ranking that includes five first-place votes, the Yotes are ready to surprise the league once again.
Last season, The College of Idaho showcased their resilience with a remarkable 9-2-2 conference record, paving the way for their first-ever NAIA championship tournament berth. With 23 of the 33 athletes returning this season, the Yotes are building on a solid foundation of talent and experience that promises to make them a formidable force in the conference.
Key Returners
Among the returning players, senior midfielder Jorge Fernandez stands out. A first-team All-CCC selection, Fernandez was a dynamic playmaker last season, netting 14 goals and providing 2 assists. His leadership and scoring ability will be crucial as the Yotes aim for further success.
Grant Embree, a senior defender and second-team All-CCC honoree, is another key returner. With 4 goals and 1 assist to his name last season, Embree's defensive skills and contributions on set pieces will be vital in maintaining a solid backline.
Junior striker Eric Hornung also returns after a strong season that saw him score 6 goals and contribute 4 assists. His offensive prowess adds depth to an already potent attacking unit.
Key Losses
While the Yotes are returning a wealth of talent, they will have to navigate the loss of two significant players. Goalkeeper Tom Baynard-Smith, a first-team All-CCC selection, leaves big shoes to fill between the posts. His standout performances were pivotal to the team's success last year. Additionally, defender Emil Powles, also a first-team All-CCC pick, will be missed for his defensive acumen and leadership on the field.
Key Newcomers
To bolster their lineup, the Yotes have welcomed several promising newcomers. Luke Quinn, a defender who earned the 2022 Golden Valley Conference Defender of the Year title and was a two-time all-conference selection, is expected to make an immediate impact in the backline.
Freshman striker Keidin Green from Shiroi, Japan, brings international flair and scoring potential to the Yotes' attack. Alongside him, freshman defender Jake Anderson, hailing from Seattle Pacific, adds depth to the defensive roster.
Looking Ahead
With the season fast approaching, the expectations are high for The College of Idaho. As they look to build on last year's success, the combination of experienced returners and talented newcomers gives the Yotes a unique blend of skill and determination. The confidence shown by their peers in the preseason rankings suggests that the Yotes are ready to challenge for the top spot in the conference and make another run at the NAIA championship.
As the Yotes gear up for the new season, fans can expect an electrifying brand of soccer and a team determined to leave their mark on the conference. The quest for a second consecutive conference tournament title and another shot at the NAIA championship begins soon, and the Yotes are ready to make history.
