Box Score CALDWELL, Idaho — The College of Idaho Yotes delivered a stunning cross-town sweep over rival Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in a three-sport showcase this week, underscoring their dominance despite competing in different collegiate divisions.
In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, the Yotes triumphed in men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball against the NCAA Division II Nighthawks, who are traditionally their tougher rivals in exhibition games.
The action kicked off on Thursday night when the College of Idaho men's soccer team defeated NNU 4-1. The Yotes controlled the match from start to finish, with standout performances from forwards Jorge Fernandez and Eric Hornung, who each scored a brace and a single goal respectively to seal the victory.
Saturday morning brought a tightly contested women's soccer matchup, where the Yotes edged out the Nighthawks 1-0. A decisive goal in the first 15 seconds of the second half by junior forward Eden Makaafi was enough to secure the win for the College of Idaho, while the defense remained impenetrable throughout.
The volleyball matchup later in the day was equally thrilling. The College of Idaho triumphed over Northwest Nazarene University 3-1, with set scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-14. The match was marked by intense rallies and strategic plays, with Janae Rayborn, a standout player for the Yotes, leading the team with an impressive 16 kills and a .424 hitting percentage
The sweep is particularly noteworthy given the disparity between the institutions' athletic affiliations. The College of Idaho competes in the NAIA, while NNU is a member of NCAA Division II. The two teams typically only face each other in exhibition contests due to their different regular-season schedules.
