ON TO NATIONALS: The ski season culminates this week with the USCSA National Championships, at the Whiteface Mountain Olympic Venue in Lake Placid, N.Y. The C of I men head to Nationals for the eighth time in 10 years and their 32nd all-time trip – including a third-place finish in 2016 in the alpine combined – with the Coyotes winning three alpine combined national titles (1980, 1986, 1990). The C of I women make their 35th all-time trip to Nationals, including their 21st appearance in the last 24 years. It is the first USCSA Championships since 2020, as the 2021 event was canceled due to COVID-19.
LAST TIME AT LAKE PLACID: The Coyote men represented the College the last time the event was held at the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics – finishing fifth in the alpine combined in 2020. The 4,650-foot mountain has a current base of 30-inches, with a 47-inch base at the top of Drapers' Drop.
SURVEYING THE FIELD: Both C of I teams head to the USCSA Championships as Northwest Conference champions, while finishing second to rival Rocky Mountain at the USCSA Western Regionals. The C of I men feature a trio of standout competitors – NWCSC champ, freshman
Carson Parco, along with sophomores
Benjamin Troyer and
William Paquette. The C of I women are led by NWCSC champ, freshman
Taylor Watkins, along with sophomores
Sasha Mueller and
Amy Farley. Teams to beat in Upstate New York include powerhouse squads from Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountain, along with top programs from Clarkson, St. Olaf and Babson, and solid teams from Penn State, Army, Lehigh, Cornell, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Syracuse.
ABOUT THE EVENT: A total of 20 men's teams and 20 women's teams will compete in the alpine combined –women racing Tuesday-Thursday and the men racing Wednesday-Friday. Place points from the giant slalom and slalom events will be combined to determine the overall national champion. C of I will also compete in the Ski-Cross event during the break between the giant slalom and slalom races, along with Saturday's dual slalom.
