2021 Men's Soccer Notebook (Week 5)

COMING UP: at Rocky Mountain, Saturday, 1 p.m.

COMPLETE WEEKLY MEDIA NOTEBOOK

VIDEO / STAT LINKS: College of Idaho's away match against Rocky Mountain College will feature Live Video on the Battlin' Bears All-Access and Live Stats can be followed on the SIDEARM Stats Link.

NOTE SCHEDULING, MEN'S TEAM PLAYS FIRST: Throughout the 2021 Cascade Conference schedule, men's and women's teams will play doubleheaders – with the men's team playing the opening game and the women's team playing Game 2.

FRIDAY MATCH AT PROVIDENCE CANCELED: Due to COVID-19 issues within the U. of Providence men's and women's soccer programs, both C of I's men's and women's soccer programs will not compete on Friday in Great Falls, Mont. The games will not be rescheduled. Due to the cancellations, both of C of I's soccer teams will get a 1-0 forfeit win against the Argos.

NOT THE YOTES FIRST FORFEIT: The forfeit win C of I earned from the University of Providence is not the first time the Yotes have earned a win via a forfeit. The Coyotes saw a score vs. Oregon Tech flipped in their favor following the 2018 season due to OIT playing with an ineligible player - with C of I also earning forfeit wins due in 1999 (vs. Simon Fraser), 1989 (vs. Warner Pacific) and 1988 (vs. Western Baptist).

YOTES DROP HOMECOMING GAME AGAINST MOUNTAINEERS: C of I capitalized on only one of their 33 shot attempts, while Eastern Oregon found the net on three of their four shots on frame to defeat the Yotes 3-1 at Simplot Stadium last Sunday. 75 minutes into the match, EOU led 2-0 on only two shot attempts, while keeper Dalton Mauzay made nine saves in goal. The Yotes kept the pressure on with a goal from Emil Powles to cut the lead to 2-1, but an 84th minute insurance goal from Angel Rojas secured the win for EOU.

BACK-TO-BACK GOALS: Sophomore defender Emil Powles continues his impressive 2021 campaign with goals in back-to-back games for the Yotes. Scoring the lone goal in the loss to EOU, Powles had five shots and a team-high four shots on target in the match.

YOTES RANK FIFTH IN CONFERENCE: With the loss to EOU, C of I are currently in fifth place in the CCC 2021 Men's Soccer Standings. C of I is currently tied in points (12) with Eastern Oregon. Warner Pacific (5-1 CCC) and Corban (5-1 CCC) are currently tied for first with 15 points each, with Oregon Tech (4-1 CCC) and Southern Oregon (4-1 CCC) rounding out the top four.

LEAGUE LEADERS: On the offensive side, Warner Pacific's Arturo Bahena leads the CCC with 11 goals in 10 games. C of I's Caio Pereira is currently tied for fourth with five goals in seven games. On the assist side, Oregon Tech's John Sarna leads the way with five assists in nine games. C of I's Lucas Thorne is tied for third with three assists in seven games. JJ Osuna, Kristian Quiros and Emil Powles are all tied for tenth with two assists in seven games. In the net, Oregon Tech's Joel Witts leads all goalkeepers with a 0.38 goals against average in 716 minutes. C of I's Zac Dean is in seventh with a 1.32 goals against average in 409 minutes. For shutouts, Warner Pacific's Alexis Calderilla-Hurtado is first with three shutouts in eight games. C of I's Drew Morris is tied for eighth with one shutout in four games.

THE ATTACK CONTINUES: Despite only scoring one goal against EOU, C of I continues to light up the stat sheet with shots this season. Against the Mountaineers, the Yotes had 33 shots in last Sunday's match. Caio Pereira led the Yotes with six shots, while Kristian Quiros and Emil Powles were just behind at five shots in the game. After Sunday, the Yotes have shot 169 times this season - an average of 24.1 shots per game.

OPPONENT PREVIEW – ROCKY MOUNTAIN: The lone game of the road trip is a matchup with Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. The Battlin' Bears (4-3-2, 1-3-1 CCC) are coming off back-to-back home losses against Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech. Against the Raiders, SOU's Luis Navarrete found the back of the net in the 94th minute to beat Rocky Mountain 2-1 in overtime. Against the Hustlin' Owls, the Battlin' Bears were held to only three shots en route to a 2-0 loss at Wendy's Field. Milo Downey leads the team with five goals in nine games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: As a team, the Coyotes rank No. 1 in the CCC in shots per game (24.14). The team is also No. 4 in goals per game (3.0) and points per game (7.86). Individually, Caio Pereira ranks No. 1 in the CCC in shots per game (3.71) with Kristian Quiros at No. 6 (3.14). Lucas Thorne ranks No. 2 in assists per game (0.43).
