ON TO NATIONALS: The ski season culminates this week with the USCSA National Championships, to be held on the Whiteface Mountain Olympic Venue in Lake Placid, N.Y. The C of I men head to Nationals for the seventh time in eight years and their 31st all-time trip – including a third-place finish in 2016 in the alpine combined – with the Coyotes winning three alpine combined national titles (1980, 1986, 1990). For only the second time in the last 22 seasons, the Coyote women will not be headed to the Championships.
ALPINE SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK: Competition begins on Wednesday with the giant slalom scheduled (Run 1 at 9:30 a.m. ET; Run 2 at 12:15 p.m. ET), and slalom races set for Friday (Run 1 at 9:30 a.m. ET; Run 2 at 12:15 p.m. ET). The Yotes are also expected to compete in the Skier-X competition on Thursday and the Dual-Panel Slalom on Saturday.
LAST TIME AT LAKE PLACID: Both C of I teams competed in Lake Placid at the 2018 National Championships, with the Yotes placing eighth in the combined. Whiteface Mountain, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, currently features a Snow King currently features a 26-inch base, with 36-inches of snow atop the 4,865-foot mountain. The USCSA teams had their opening ceremonies in the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid – site of the historic run of the 1980 USA men's hockey team.
SURVEYING THE FIELD: The Coyotes head to the USCSA Championships as Northwest Conference champions, while finishing third overall at the USCSA Western Regionals. Sophomore Mateo Gonzalez earned the bronze medal at the regional championship in the slalom, while he and
Trevor Trimble each earned Top-10 efforts in the giant slalom. Teams to beat in Upstate New York include powerhouse squads from Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountain, along with top programs from Clarkson, St. Olaf and Babson, and solid teams from Army, Connecticut, Northeastern and Lehigh.
RIDING OFF INTO THE SUNSET: The USCSA Championships is the final event for 30-year head coach
Ron Bonneau, who will be retiring at the end of the season. Bonneau has been a fixture at the College since the early 1990s – guiding nine individual and 14 team national champions, 39 first-team All-Americans and 105 scholar-athletes.
