BOISE, Idaho – A third-place finish from Mateo Gonzalez in today's slalom event propelled the College of Idaho to a third-place finish in the Alpine Combined at the USCSA Western Regionals on the Bowl Run at Bogus Basin Ski Area.
As a team, the Yotes finished fifth in the slalom event (4:59.94) – but coupled with their fourth-place finish in yesterdays giant slalom, helped C of I earn a podium spot in the combined and allowed the team to earn one of four bids to the USCSA National Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Gonzalez broke up the dominance of team champion, Rocky Mountain College (4:27.13) – recording the third-fastest opening run and finishing with a 2-run combined time of 1:30.51. RMC's Alexander Sehlberg (1:27.90) completed a weekend sweep of the events, with teammate Oscar Dahmalm in second (1:29.56).
Colorado (4:43.07) placed second in the slalom, with Colorado Mesa in third (4:51.29). Rocky, Colorado Mesa, C of I and Air Force claimed the Western Region bids to Nationals.
Trevor Trimble capped a quality weekend for the Yotes, placing 16th (1;36.09), with
Arnav Virmani completing C of I's scoring trio with a 34th-place effort (1:53.34). Two other C of I athletes completed runs –
William Gisler in 40th (2:01.44) and
Jarod Esnoz in 43rd (2:03.10).
