Coyote Football Signs 40 to Letters of Intent

CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho head football coach Mike Moroski unveiled the first 40 members of his 2019 recruiting class – including 31 players who call the Gem State home.

The Yotes added 20 offensive players, 18 defensive players and two specialists – with 37 of the 40 players incoming freshmen. C of I added 12 All-State selections – including eight on the defensive side of the ball.

"We are extremely excited about this recruiting class," Moroski said. "It is the best recruiting class we have had here at the C of I."

Seven new players will join the Coyote secondary – including four All-State picks. Jake Molesworth of Boise High, Kaimana Nawahine of Rocky Mountain High and Bridger Marboe of Eagle High all earned 5A All-State honors. Molesworth led BHS with 95 tackles and a pair of interceptions; Nawahine had a Southern Idaho Conference leading seven interceptions in helping RMHS to the state crown; with Marboe recording 36 tackles as one of the top corners in the SIC. Middleton safety Austin Steblay had 39 tackles en route to 4A All-State honors, with Century High two-sport standout Deshun Harwell earning All-District 5-6 honors. Also joining the secondary are Grant Miller, a starter at Lincoln High in Portland (a 6A school) and Will Janney, who had five interceptions last fall at Palisades High in California.

Four linebackers are set to add a deep group of returners – including three All-State selections and two state champs. Rocky Mountain High standout Dylan Martinez led the 5A ranks in tackles with 146, earning All-State honors in leading his team to the state title, while Declo High product Tyson Matthews was named to the 2A All-State team on both sides of the ball, helping his team to the 2017 and 2018 titles. Long Pin Conference Defensive Player of the Year and 1A Division II All-State pick Canyon Harper joins the team from 8-man Salmon River High, with All-SIC pick, Noah Beltz had 60 tackles at Skyview High.

Size and speed highlight the new defensive line recruits – three tackles and four ends. California products Gino Allen (6-0, 255) was an All-Tri City Athletic League pick at St. Mary's High in Stockton, with Jonathan Aamodt (5-10, 280) earning All-Marine League accolades at Carson High. Fellow tackle, Warren Craig (6-1, 255) was a two-way All-SIC selection at Middleton High. On the outside, C of I signed some of the best pass rushers in the Treasure Valley – Luke McLaughlin (6-2, 215) of Bishop Kelly High, Alex Ojukwu (6-3, 220) of Boise High, Declan Smith (6-3, 205) of Nampa High and Cade Flint (6-2, 205) of Columbia High. McLaughlin was a 4A All-State selection and SIC Defensive Player of the Year after recording 67 tackles and 11 sacks; Ojukwu earned 5A All-SIC honors after logging 67 stops; Smith had 42 tackles earning All-SIC honors; with Flint recording six sacks, earning All-SIC honors on both sides of the ball.

With C of I returning four quarterbacks for 2019, the Yotes signed just one signal caller – Ryan Hibbs of Capital High. Hibbs earned 5A All-SIC honors as a senior, going 151-for-218 (69-percent completion percentage) for 2,288 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Two running backs will add depth to a quality group of returners. Ed Osterberger of Timberline High was a 2017 5A All-State selection – rushing for 2,457 yards and 18 touchdowns over the past two seasons, with Tommy Dunham, an All-West Catholic Athletic League pick at Valley Christian High in San Jose, Calif., rushing for 890 yards and 12 scores as a senior.

Ten new receivers will wear the Purple and Gold in 2019 – seven freshmen and the lone three transfers in the class. Leading the group is 4A All-State pick Carson Smith, who led the classification with 81 receptions for 1,417 yards and 22 touchdowns at Middleton High. Three other 4A All-SIC selections join the Yotes – Grant Garner of Vallivue High, who had 21 catches for 481 yards and three touchdowns; Grant Roberts of Nampa High, who hauled in 22 passes for 219 yards and four scores; and Chase Burfeind of Caldwell High, who caught 28 balls for 283 yards and three touchdowns. C of I added Carson Jones, a 5A All-SIC pick at Boise High and Nelson Russell of Eagle High, who earned 5A All-SIC honors as a running back during the 2018 season.  Transfers Kendrick Brasby, Tanner Donaldson and Alex Wright will add experience to the position group – Brasby, a former Bishop Kelly High player, spent last season at Northwestern College in Iowa; Donaldson played last season at Division II Azusa Pacific; with Wright, a former Middleton High player, returning home after spending last year at the University of Iowa. The team added one tight end – Nico Reis of St. Mary's High in California, with the Brazil native combining for 46 receptions for 605 yards the past two years.

C of I added seven offensive linemen – all from highly-successful prep programs. Garrett Rehberg (6-6, 275) was the anchor of the Bishop Kelly line, earning 4A All-State honors, with Clayton Wolfe (6-2, 260) key in leading Homedale to the 3A title game, earning All-State accolades. Mountain View High teammates Camille Massaad (6-4, 260) and Ryan Halford (6-2, 265) were both All-SIC picks; Cameron Foster (5-8, 280) earned All-SIC honors at Rocky Mountain, helping his team to the 5A state title; Cole Owen (6-4, 280) of Skyline High, joins his brother Chase Owen, a current C of I lineman; with J. P. Cardillo (6-3, 280) earning All-Camino League honors at Grace Brethren High in California, leading his club to the CIF Division 2-AA state title.

Kicker Jacob Johnson makes the trip to Caldwell from Northwest Christian High in Arizona, where he made 73-of-77 extra points in leading his team to the 3A state title; with long snapper, Mikee Farrar of Horseshoe Bend making the short trip to the C of I.
