2018 Football Weekly Notes (Week 1 at Eastern Oregon)

COMING UP: at Eastern Oregon, Saturday, 6 p.m. (PDT)

COMPLETE MEDIA GAME NOTES

QUICK HITS
  • The 2018 season marks the 74th year of Coyote football as a collegiate program (C of I competed as an Academy from 1905-17 against high school and local town teams), recording an all-time record of 280-280-28. The Yotes had a football program every season from 1905-77 (minus the 1917 season, due to World War I, and the 1943, 1944 and 1945 seasons due to World War II). The team was disbanded following the 1977 season, with the squad returning to the gridiron in 2014.
  • The Coyotes will be playing their 19th season at Simplot Stadium, beginning competition in 1964.  C of I has an all-time record of 33-49-3, with the 2014, 2015 and 2017 teams three of the five teams (joining the 1968 and 1969 clubs) to post a .500 or better home record. The 2017 squad finished 4-1 at home - the most wins by a Coyote team at Simplot Stadium in program history.
  • The Yotes are 34-26-1 in season openers since 1942 - 11-14 in road openers and 23-12-1 at home, including nine-straight wins from 1962-70. C of I won their home openers in 2014 and 2015, coming at the heels of a seven-game losing skid from 1971-77 - while the squad won their last road opener, 35-34, at Pacific in 2014. Twice, the Coyotes have won six-straight opening games (1946-51 and 1959-64).

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • COYOTES PICKED THIRD IN THE FRONTIER CONFERENCE: Coming off a 6-5 season, including a 6-4 record within the Frontier Conference (good enough for a tie for second place), C of I was picked to finish third in the Preseason Frontier Conference coaches' poll, released Aug. 1. It marked the highest preseason positioning for the Yotes since joining the league in 2014. Southern Oregon received six of the first place votes and earned the top spot, followed by Rocky Mountain, with C of I and Montana Tech tied for third. Carroll, Eastern Oregon, Montana Western and MSU-Northern rounded out the balloting. In the Preseason NAIA Top-25 poll, SOU was the highest team from the league, earning a No. 4 ranked, while Rocky opens the year at No. 20. C of I received 10 voter points - their highest total in the national poll in program history, joining Montana Tech in the others' receiving votes list.
  • WIN STREAK ON THE LINE: C of I will open the 2018 season riding a three-game win streak - having earned wins over Eastern Oregon (38-20), Montana Tech (64-35) and Montana State-Northern (45-22) to close out last season. The Coyotes last won four or more games in a row in 1969 - when Ed Bonaminio's C of I team began the season 5-0.
  • NFL TALENT ON THE SIDELINES: The Coyotes have added two new coaches in 2018 - both with impressive resumes. Offensive line coach Nate Potter was an consensus All-American at Boise State and played in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals, while defensive backs coach Shiloh Keo was an All-Western Athletic Conference pick at the University of Idaho and played with the New Orleans Saints and won a Super Bowl title with the Denver Broncos.
  • FIRST GAME ON TURF IN LA GRANDE: Saturday night's game will mark the first game played on a new artificial turf surface at Community Stadium in La Grande - as Eastern Oregon joins C of I, Southern Oregon, Montana Tech and Rocky Mountain as Frontier Conference teams with synthetic fields. It also marks the fourth night game the Coyotes have played since football returned in 2014, with C of I 2-1 in night games (losing 47-7 at EOU in 2014; winning 42-12 at Willamette in 2016; winning 20-7 at EOU in 2016).
  • NO RADIO: For the first time since football returned, there will not be a radio broadcast in the Treasure Valley for Coyote football. Saturday's game, however, will have a free audio stream available through Facebook Live via the Coyote Athletics Facebook Page with Mike Safford calling the action.
