GREAT FALLS, Mont. –
Ashley Pesek tossed a complete game four-hitter and
Destiny Turner extended her hitting streak to 20 games, as the College of Idaho split a doubleheader with first-place Great Falls at the UGF Multi-Sport Complex.
The Argonauts (16-10, 10-6) ran their win streak to eight with an 8-3 win in Game 1, while the Lady Yotes (12-15-1, 6-10) ended a six-game losing streak of their own with a 4-2 victory in Game 2.
Turner had a leadoff single in both games, going a combined 3-for-6 on the day. Her hit streak is the second only to Molly Mills' 21-game streak over the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and the fourth longest in Cascade Conference history – as Mills and Oregon Tech Lisa Erwert (2006) had 21-game streaks and Concordia's Kayla Vickayrous holds the record with a 24-game streak in 2010.
Pesek was outstanding in the night cap, walking just two and striking out six for her fifth win of the year.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, C of I pieced together a two-out rally to take the lead. With
Bentli Corta at second,
Ali Longoria lined an RBI double to event the score – moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
An inning later, Corta walked with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 3-1, with Pesek helping her own cause in the seven with an RBI double. UGF would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Pesek got a pop up and a ground out to end the game.
Turner had the lone multi-hit effort in Game 2, going 2-for-2.
In Game 1, C of I staked themselves to a 1-0 lead in the first, as Turner singled and scored on a two-out
Katie Rowe double.
The Argos tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the third and used a four-run third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Alyssa Keeler had the big blow in the inning, ripping a two-run single.
C of I cut the margin to 5-3 in the fourth on a two-run double from
Katelyn Geyer, only to see UGF answer in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double from Hali Gruntowicz and add an unearned run in the sixth.
Keely Van Blaricom allowed six hits to earn the Game 1 victory, with Keeler and Chloe Cross each recording two hits.
Hailey Chambers was 2-for-3 for the Yotes, with
Cortni Pena taking the loss after allowing seven earned runs in four-plus innings of work.
C of I closes out the road portion of the regular-season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Carroll College.
