CALDWELL, Idaho –
Destiny Turner had three doubles on the afternoon to break College of Idaho's career school record in a doubleheader split with Northwest Christian at Symms Field.
The Lady Yotes (11-10-1, 5-5 CCC) scored nine first inning runs in a 13-2 victory in Game 1, only to watch the Beacons tie the game in the seventh inning of Game 2, adding four eighth inning runs to steal an 8-4 win.
Turner was 4-for-7 with four RBI in the two games, with the three doubles pushing her career total to 37, surpassing the previous mark of 36 set by Haley Butcher from 2006-09.
C of I sent 13 batters to the plate in the opening frame of Game 1 – jumping out to the huge lead. The Yotes loaded the bases on a Turner double, a
Bentli Corta walk and a
Hailey Chambers bloop single.
Katie Rowe delivered a run with a fielders' choice, followed by a line-drive three-run homer from
Cortni Pena to make it 4-0. Singles by
Delaney Atkins and
Jodie Hoagland were followed by a two-run double from
Tess Willis. After an NCU (8-23, 4-8) error, Turner singled home a pair and Chambers lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Yotes made it 13-0 in the third on a Chambers RBI double and a Rowe three-run homer, before the Beacons averted the shutout in the fourth on a Kyndle Delcollo two-run homer.
Pena got the complete game win for C of I, allowing five hits and striking out three, while going 2-for-2 at the plate. Chambers finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, part of a 13-hit attack by the Yotes.
Anita Singh was 3-for-3 for NCU, with starter Breanne Johnson taking the loss, allowing eight runs in a third of an inning.
Game 2 was a see-saw affair, with the Yotes striking first with two outs in the fourth – as
Alex Kordopatis gapped an RBI single and scored on a base hit by
Courtney Ellis.
NCU answered with one swing in the fifth, as Parker Fritter crushed a long three-run homer with two outs to put the visitors atop 3-2. The Yotes regained the lead in the sixth, as a walk and two out error set up Turner, who lined a two-run double into the left-center alley to make it 4-3.
The Beacons got even in the seventh, as Jessica Garner slapped a leadoff double and scored on a Paige Griffith infield out.
C of I had a chance to win the game in the seventh, but stranded Rowe, who reached third base with one out. In the eighth, NCU broke through for four runs, as an infield single by Griffith plated the go-ahead run, and Fritter ripped a two-run double to break the game open.
Fritter was 3-for-5 with five RBI and Garner added three hits for the Beacons, with starter Janieve Boyles getting the complete game win – allowing seven hits and fanning two.
Kordopatis was 2-for-3 for the Yotes, with starter
Ashley Pesek earning a no-decision after allowing four hits and six walks in six-plus innings of work.
The Lady Yotes hit the road for games next weekend at Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon.
