CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho catchers
Destiny Turner and
Hailey Chambers each had four hits on the day, as the Lady Yotes split a Cascade Conference doubleheader with Great Falls at Symms Field.
The Coyotes (5-6-1, 2-2 CCC) scored the first seven runs of an 8-2 Game 1 win, but the Argos broke a tie game with a three-run seventh inning outburst to pick up a Game 2 5-2 victory.
In the opener, C of I got a pair of key two out hits in the second inning to grab an early lead. With two runners on,
Angelina Romero lined an RBI double to left to get the Yotes on the board, with Kristen Paulazzo punching a two-run single to left to extend the margin to 3-0.
An inning later, the Yotes batted around for fourth runs – with
Delaney Atkins and Chambers driving home a run each with singles, with
Ashley Pesek and Romero plating runs with ground outs.
It was all
Ashley Pesek needed, working around eight hits to pick up her third win of 2016 in complete game fashion. Turner, Chambers, Pesek, Paulazzo and
Katie Rowe all had two hits for the Yotes, with Alex Lowry and Hali Gruntowicz recording two hits for UGF (8-6, 2-2).
Game 2 was tight throughout, as the Argos plated two unearned runs in the fourth on a Jocelyn Kaufman two-run single to break a scoreless tie.
C of I answered back, as a Chambers RBI single in the fourth and an Atkins RBI fielders' choice in sixth tied the game at 2-2.
UGF, however, proved to be too much, as a two-out Alex Lowry single in the seventh broke the stalemate and back-to-back RBI doubles from Keeley Van Blaricom and Alissa Keeler made it 5-2.
Van Blaricom did it from there, retiring the Yotes in order in the seventh for her fifth win – striking out six in the victory. Kaufman was 2-for-3 in the victory, while both Turner and Chambers had two hits for C of I.
The Coyotes return to action on Friday, traveling to Walla Walla for a doubleheader.
