STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The strength & conditioning staff is committed to providing the very best training environment possible with regard to relationships.  We work to develop a competitive attitude, strong work ethic, mental toughness and unwavering discipline. We are likewise committed to providing the very best in program design, instruction and assessment.  The basis for our program is grounded in reliable science.  Our ultimate goal is to keep our student athletes safe during training, help prevent injuries and improve athletic performance.51305129

Strength & power development is focused primarily in a ground based or closed chain, multi-joint movement pattern.  We emphasize hip development, low back and core “power zones”.  We train for power, as power is a function of strength.  We focus on technique first.  You are only as strong as what you can lift correctly.

We assess each sport individually and train athleticism as it relates to speed, specifically transitional speed.  This includes acceleration speed, deceleration efficiency, agility, balance and flexibility.  Athletic movement requires multi-directional start, stop, acceleration, deceleration, and explosive jumping.  We address all of these in different aspects of program design.

Our conditioning programs are centered on the energy system requirements for the sport/activity.  We focus on building work capacity and increasing the anaerobic threshold.  This is done by controlling the pace of workouts and the duration of recovery both in the weight room and on the field or court.

The final and most critical element to our programming is recovery.  This is vitally important as it relates directly to growth, development and injury prevention.  This is a deliberately planned aspect of program design including but not limited to nutrition, active rest, sleep, aquatic training / therapy and self-myofascial release.

51675164Aquatic training and therapy are highly emphasized in our program as part of recovery and resistance training. The benefits of aquatics training / therapy are as follows:
  • Warm water promotes muscle relaxation and increases peripheral circulation.
  • Viscosity of water provides resistance for strength training.
  • Warm water stimulates balance, body awareness, and trunk stability.
  • The decrease of gravitational forces in the pool allows the athlete to stand and begin gait training and strengthening exercises without causing further damage to healing structures.
  • Warm water and buoyancy results in decreased pain sensitivity.

The strength & conditioning staff will be in compliance with the rules of the NAIA, Frontier/Cascade Conferences, The College of Idaho and Coyote Athletics.  All strength & conditioning staff are committed to equal and ethical treatment for all student athletes, students, faculty and staff who use the facility.
