Mendiola Honored for Leadership with CCC Coach of Character Award

CALDWELL, Idaho — College of Idaho head volleyball coach Liz Mendiola has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Coach of Character of the Year, recognizing her leadership, service, and commitment to student-athlete development.

After her 25th season leading the program, Mendiola's impact extends well beyond the court. She serves as the institution's Senior Woman Leader and oversees the Association of Student-Athletes, playing a key role in fostering leadership and service opportunities across the department.

Among her many initiatives, Mendiola helps organize the annual Special Olympics Idaho Field Day, welcoming local special education programs to campus for inclusive activities alongside Yote student-athletes. The event promotes meaningful connections while reinforcing the importance of service and community engagement.

Mendiola is also a strong advocate for student-athlete mental health. She has been instrumental in organizing leadership programming with the Jae Foundation, providing student-athletes with tools to support one another and encouraging open conversations around mental health and suicide awareness. Her efforts include bringing her entire team to participate in programming and hosting an annual awareness event.

Known for her servant leadership, Mendiola consistently supports department-wide efforts, regularly assisting with game day operations and other responsibilities outside her role. Her humility and willingness to serve set a standard that resonates throughout the athletic department.

Within her program, she emphasizes team unity through intentional culture-building, including preseason bonding activities and post-practice recognition that reinforce accountability and encouragement.

Mendiola's leadership continues to shape a culture grounded in integrity, service, and connection, making her a deserving recipient of the conference's Coach of Character honor.
