SPOKANE, Wash. - Down 2-1 after doubles, the College of Idaho women's tennis team rallied with five wins in singles to defeat host Whitworth, 6-3 on Saturday.
It was the second time this season the Yotes had defeated the Pirates, the NCAA Division III team. The win raises the record for College of Idaho to 5-10. The last time that College of Idaho had five wins in a season was in 2017.
After a pair of close matches in doubles and a victory by the No. 1 team for the Yotes of
Lauren Kreutzer and
Leiana Almaraz by an 8-4 margin. According to C of I head coach
Jennifer Swing, the team refocused when the match moved to singles.
The refocused efforts saw College of Idaho win five of the six singles matches on its way to the win. One of the big wins according to Swing was a comeback win by
Anna Willcuts, who lost a close first set by a 7-5 margin to come back to even the match at a set apiece with a 6-4 win. In the third set, she dominated the tiebreaker to pick up the No. 5 singles win.
Next, College of Idaho will face Whitman on Sunday, April 16 at 11 a.m.
