CALDWELL, Idaho –
Dimick Wood tossed a complete game 3-hitter, striking out 10, as The College of Idaho helped skipper
Shawn Humberger win his 600th career game, a 4-3 Game 1 victory over Corban University at Wolfe Field.
Humberger, the all-time winningest coach at C of I in any sport, is in his 21st season as the head coach of the Coyote program. He is one of 26 active NAIA coaches with 600 or more wins.
Wood worked around three walks to toss the Yotes (15-20, 7-13 CCC) first nine inning complete game since 2019. He retired the final seven batters in order after the Warriors had the tying runner in scoring position in the seventh inning.
Nate Cantonwine got the visitors on the board in the first with an RBI double, but a
Jonah Hultberg triple and a
Matthew Clay RBI single in the bottom of the inning evened the score. C of I took advantage of three walks, a hit-by-pitch and a 2-out error to score three fourth inning runs – without a hit.
Clay went 2-for-4 in the win for C of I.
The Warriors (11-21, 10-10) won a pitching duel in Game 2, as Zack Simon outlasted
Austin Van Horne, 7-2.
The two righties were dominant – Simon striking out nine in a complete game effort, while Van Horne fanned seven in seven innings – but Corban held a 2-1 lead, thanks to fifth inning RBI singles from Aiden Bunn and Maxwell Jeffrey.
Corban broke the game open with a 4-run eighth, as a 2-run Reese Fawley single keyed the rally.
Both Hultberg and
Ben Dudley had two hits in the loss for C of I.
The Yotes return to action next weekend with a 4-game series at Eastern Oregon.
