CALDWELL, Idaho –
Matthew Clay roped a go-ahead 2-out RBI single in the seventh inning of Game 1 to lead College of Idaho to a 4-3 win, but the Coyotes squandered a stellar start from
Jaden Trueblood, as Corban University rallied for a 5-2 victory in Game 2 at Wolfe Field.
Locked in a 3-3 stalemate in the opener,
Ben Hansen drew a 1-out walk in the seventh, with
Austin Van Horne adding a 2-out walk. Clay followed, roping an opposite field single to plate Hansen, giving the Coyotes (14-19, 6-12 CCC) the 1-run lead.
Silas Shumate did the rest, stranding the tying run at third base in the eighth and coaxing a double play ball and a strikeout to pick up his first career save.
Connor Root went the first seven innings, allowing just four hits in his fourth win of the season.
The Warriors (10-20, 9-9) took a 2-0 lead in the second on a Justin Tow RBI single, but C of I took the lead an inning later, as a
Weston Miller 2-run single capped a 3-run frame. Tow got the visitors even in the fourth, but the C of I pitchers put up zeros the rest of the way.
Miller went 2-for-3 in the win, with Tow recording two of Corban's five hits.
Trueblood was the story in Game 2, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The freshman walked four and struck out a career-high eight batters, but three-straight singles in the sixth, the last a Kyle Clay RBI knock, got Corban even at 1-1.
The Warriors capitalized on a Coyote error in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead and added insurance runs in the final two innings to complete the win.
C of I struck first in the second on
Carter Vieira's first career home run and cut the margin to 3-2 in the eighth on a Clay RBI single, but stranded the tying run in scoring position.
Nate Martin got the win for the Warriors, working around five hits in seven-plus innings, with Jacob Asa getting the final five outs for the save. Clay and Hultberg each had two hits in the loss for C of I.
The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
