CALDWELL, Idaho – Maxwell Pierce scored four goals and Ryan Dickson added three more, as Dominican University ended College of Idaho's 20-match regular-season win streak, topping the Yotes, 12-8, at Simplot Stadium.
The Penguins (1-0), a MCLA Division I team, became the first team to ever defeat C of I on the Simplot turf – using a bruising defensive effort to keep the high-scoring Division II team at bay.
A 3-goal onslaught in the first five minutes gave DU a lead they would not relinquish – as Nicholas Becker one-hopped a goal past C of I goalie Cade Brown and Pierce scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead.
Playing catch-up the entire afternoon, the Coyotes (1-1) cut the margin to one-goal on three different occasions, but could not pull even.
A Dane Hamilton strike off a Joey Brant pass was followed 16 seconds later by a goal off the draw from Hank Ontiveros, pulling the hosts within 3-2 midway through the first period. However, the Penguins answered, as back-to-back goals from Dickson, including a behind the back finish, helped DU to an 8-5 lead at the break.
C of I played with intensity in the third quarter – as goals from Ontiveros and Loy Howard pulled the Coyotes within 8-7 with four minutes left in the period. Dickson answered with a quick goal – starting a string of four straight DU strikes that put the match away – while defensemen Cole Ramsay and Andrew Wyllie handcuffed the Coyote attack.
Howard scored three goals to lead the Yotes, with Ontiveros adding two goals and an assist.
