MESA, Ariz. – Despite 2-hit days from
Matthew Clay,
Caden Leiblein and
Nick Mooney, The College of Idaho allowed 10 unearned runs, as San Diego Christian took advantage the Coyote mistakes to grab a 13-7 win at Gene Autry Park.
Â
The Yotes (1-2) took an early 2-0 in the opening at bat, as
Austin Van Horne gapped a 2-run triple to plate Clay and
Ryan Nolan. However, SDCC (2-1) answered with three second inning runs and batted around for six run – all unearned – in the third.
Â
C of I pulled within 9-5 in the fifth after a
Tobey Summers pinch hit RBI triple, with Summers scoring on a wild pitch, with the team as close as 10-6 in the sixth, when Leiblein scored on a wild pitch. However, the Hawks added a 3-run sixth to put the game away.
Â
Coyote starter
Dimick Wood gave up nine runs in 2.1 innings – but only one of the runs earned.
Carter Vieira allowed two earned runs in a career-best 3.1 innings, striking out three, with
Jared Bowman tossing 2.1 shutout innings, fanning three.
Â
Tanner Mayberry went 4-for-4 for SDCC, who finished the day with 16 hits.
Â
C of I was to have played the University of St. Katherine on Saturday, however, heavy rains in the Phoenix metro forced game times to be pushed back. The new game time conflicted with the Yotes return flight to Boise, so the two times canceled the contest.
