CALDWELL, Idaho – A 10-goal flurry over a five-minute stretch spanning the second and third quarters, as the College of Idaho clinched the PNCLL South Division title on Senior Day, rolling past Western Oregon, 24-13, at Simplot Stadium.
Hank Ontiveros scored five goals and had five assists and was instrumental in a four-goal flurry in the final 45 seconds of the first half, as the Yotes (9-0, 3-0 PNCLL South) turned a 10-6 lead into a 14-6 margin.
Western (7-3, 2-1) erased a 4-0 C of I lead – with Jonathan Williams scoring his third goal of the first quarter on a man-up opportunity, to pull the Wolves even. A goal from Alex Fidler with 54-seconds left in the half got WOU within 10-6 – but the Yotes turned the tide quickly.
Ontiveros won the ensuing face-off and found
Ryan Henning for a quick score, with the sophomore scooping up the next two face-offs and racing to the net, scoring back-to-back goals in a 14-second span. With just eight seconds left in the period, Ontiveros won a fourth face-off, finding
Casey Davies for a goal just before the halftime horn.
The onslaught continued in the third quarter, as Ontiveros found Henning for two scores – as C of I scored the first seven goals of the period – extending the lead to 21-6.
Davies had six goals and two assists, with Henning adding five goals in the win – as the Yotes finished their home schedule a perfect 7-0.
R.J. Walker and
Tyler Sanchez each scored three goals for the victors.
C of I honored their six seniors prior to the game – as Sanchez,
Aaron Canode,
Willy Budell,
Jason Leach,
Jonah Jordan and
Daniel Hernandez were recognized for each being in the Coyote program for four years.
The Yotes close out the regular-season next weekend at the University of Portland.
