VANCOUVER, B.C. - British Columbia's Niall Windeler outdueled College of Idaho's
Hunter Boyd in the opening game of a four-game NAIA West baseball series at Tourmaline West Stadium, as the T-Birds stopped the Yotes, 3-1.
Windeler went six innings, striking out six to earn his fifth win of the year - as UBC (24-18, 19-9) took advantage of five C of I errors, with two of their three runs scored on the night unearned.
UBC plated runs in the opening two innings - both via errors by the Coyotes (16-32, 10-19) - before the visitors cut the margin in half in the third on a
Matthew Clay RBI single. However, C of I could not get closer - as Windeler and three UBC relievers did not allow another Yote to reach third base.
Boyd was the tough-luck loser, tossing eight innings of 5-hit ball - with all three runs allowed unearned. Both
Chase Labbe and
Austin Van Horne each recording two hits.
The teams continue the series tomorrow with a Noon doubleheader.
