VANCOUVER, B.C. - British Columbia pitching limited the College of Idaho to just five total hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Coyotes at Tourmaline West Stadium.
Garrett Hawkins and Barry Caine combined on a 2-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory by the T-Birds (26-18, 21-9 NAIA West), in the opener, while Brandon Hupe hit two homers in a 9-1 victory in Game 2.
Richard Walker was magnificent for the Coyotes (16-34, 10-21) in the opener, tossing his fourth complete game of the season - limiting UBC to just six hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters - but made one mistake, a second inning home run to Nolan Weger.
Hawkins and Caine did the rest, as C of I did not have a base runner reach third base - as the duo walked three and surrendered singles to Drew Oschner and
Alec Hopkins in the victory.
UBC provided the power in Game 2, as Hupe and Ty Penner hit back to back home runs in the fourth inning to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. Hupe, who finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI, added a 2-run shot in the eighth inning to extend the margin to 9-0.
C of I averted a shutout in the ninth, as Canada native
Matthew Clay launched a solo homer to right.
Jared Spearling threw six innings of one-hit ball, striking out seven in the win.
The Yotes close out their season tomorrow with an 11 a.m. (PT) single game.
