LEWISTON, Idaho – Tyler Burch threw a complete-game 1-hitter, helping Lewis-Clark State take the opening game of a weekend series with College of Idaho, 9-1, at Ed Cheff Stadium.
Burch walked one and struck out nine – allowing only a
Jon Gonzalez fifth inning single in his 109-pitch effort.
LC (24-12-1, 16-7 NAIA West) used a pair of big innings early to grab the lead. The Warriors plated three runs in the third, with a Riley Way 2-run double providing the key blow, while an inning later, the hosts scored four – two on an A.J. Davis double.
The Yotes (16-24, 10-11) got their lone run in the fifth, as
Austin Van Horne reached on an error and moved to third on the Gonzalez single – scoring on a double play ball.
It marked the first time since 2014 that C of I had been held to one hit.
Hunter Boyd fanned six in the loss, with reliever
Silas Shumate tossing a scoreless inning of relief.
The two teams will play the middle games of the series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. (PT) doubleheader.
