CALDWELL, Idaho – Freshmen
Casey Davies and
Ryan Henning each scored seven goals, as the College of Idaho opened up the 2019 season with a dominating 25-9 victory over Gonzaga at Simplot Stadium.
The Yotes (1-0), ranked No. 13 in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division II Top-25, scored the first 16 goals of the match and held GU without a goal for the first 27 minutes.
C of I needed just seven seconds to score their first goal, as
Hank Ontiveros won the opening face-off and sprinted the middle of the field, slotting home a counter. The sophomore transfer had four goals and three assists, leading the team with 16 ground balls, while winning all 17 of his face-offs.
Henning scored four of his goals and Davies added a pair in a 10-goal first quarter, as the Yotes held possession for the majority of the period.
R.J. Walker and
Keenan Pattwell each scored two goals, while goalie
Cade Brown had 12 saves in his C of I debut.
Emmett Rice and Aidan Peck scored two goals in the loss for the Bulldogs (0-2) – who were receiving votes in the MCLA poll.
C of I returns to action next weekend with road games at Montana State and Montana.
