ABOUT THE NAIA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: For the first time in program history, the Coyotes were selected to participate in the 16-team NAIA Football Championship Series. It is a single-elimination tournament, with the first-round, quarterfinal and semifinal match-ups played on campus sites, with the championship game to be played at Eddie Robinson Stadium on the campus of Grambling State University in Louisiana.
Â
TEAMS IN THE TOURNAMENT: Teams are selected for the FCS in two methods – via a conference championship (12 spots) or via an at-large bid based on the final Top-25 poll (4 spots). Conference champions include Baker (Kan.) – Heart of America-South, College of Idaho – Frontier, Dickinson State (N.D.) – North Star, Grand View (Iowa) – Heart of America-North, Kansas Wesleyan – Kansas Collegiate, Keiser (Fla.) – Mid South-Sun, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) – Mid South-Bluegrass, Marian (Ind.) – Mid States-Mideast, Morningside (Iowa) – Great Plains, Ottawa (Ariz.) – Sooner Athletic, Reinhardt (Ga.) – Mid-South-Appalachian and St. Xavier (Ill.) – Mid-States-Midwest, with all having to be ranked among the Top-20 in the final Top-25 poll. At-large berths were awarded to No. 8 Northwestern (Iowa), No. 10 Cumberlands (Ky.), No. 11 St. Francis (Ind.) and No. 12 Concordia (Mich.).
Â
FIRST ROUND MATCH-UPS: Dickinson State at Morningside, Reinhardt at Marian, Baker at Kansas Wesleyan, Concordia at Grand View, Ottawa at College of Idaho, St. Francis at Lindsey Wilson, Cumberlands at Keiser, St. Xavier at Northwestern.
Â
IF THE COYOTES WIN: If C of I wins their first-round match-up, the NAIA selection committee will review host bids for the eight remaining teams in the tournament – with the four highest-remaining seeds in the tournament will host (if they make a qualifying bid), unless a flight to a quarterfinal game could be avoided. The quarterfinal pairings are based on financial considerations, geographical location of teams and the final Top-25 rating.
Â
HISTORY OF FRONTIER CONFERENCE / NORTHWEST TEAMS IN THE FCS: All eight Frontier Conference teams have now qualified for the NAIA FCS – with the league winning a combined seven national championships. Carroll College leads the way with 22 appearances in the FCS – including national titles in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2010 – with Montana Tech appearing in the tournament nine times (last appearance in 2016). Southern Oregon has made seven trips to the FCS – winning the 2014 title and last appearing in 2017 – with Rocky Mountain making their fourth all-time appearance in 2018. Montana Western has appearance three times – the last in 2002 – while both Eastern Oregon (2016) and MSU-Northern (2006) making one trip. Teams from the Northwest have had marked success on the national level – as Pacific Lutheran won NAIA crowns in 1980, 1987 and 1993; Linfield won titles in 1982, 1984 and 1986; with Central Washington winning the 1995 championship.
