MISSOULA, Mont. – A marathon day ended on a good note for the College of Idaho, as the Lady Yotes won 2-of-3 games in a Cascade Conference tripleheader against Carroll College at the Grizzly Softball Complex.
Originally a four-game series set for Helena, the series was moved to the turf field at the University of Montana. The Sunday doubleheader was postponed due to snow, with the two teams playing all three conference counters today.
Taylor Eakle and
Marissa Maddox each had five hits on the day, as the Coyotes (13-9, 4-5 CCC) took Game 1, 6-4, and earned a 5-2 win in Game 3. Carroll used a 5-run third inning to claim a 6-5 decision in the middle game.
The Lady Yotes jumped to a 4-0 lead in the opener – as a Maddox RBI double, a
Kylie Smith RBI single and a two-run
Trystin Crofts triple highlighted a big third inning. The Saints (14-8, 2-4) drew even in the fourth – tying the game on a two-out bases-clearing triple from Jaylin Kenney.
C of I won the game in the seventh, as Eakle and Maddox rapped back-to-back RBI doubles.
Colette Robert earned her ninth win of the season, working around nine hits and fanning a career-high nine batters.
The Yotes took a 2-0 second inning lead in Game 2, as
Kristin Paulazzo plated a run with an RBI single and
Courtney Ellis lined an RBI double. Carroll answered in a big way, batting around for five run third, including a go-ahead two-run single from Natalie Gaber.
C of I would pull within 5-4 in the fourth on a two-run
Kylie Smith double and get within 6-5 in the seventh on a Paulazzo RBI single – but stranded the tying and go ahead runners in scoring position.
Paulazzo and Ellis each had three hits in the loss for C of I – part of a 12-hit attack.
The rubber game of the series was decided in the second inning, as the Coyotes scored five times in the second inning to take control.
Delaney Atkins had an RBI single, Robert lined a two-run double and Ellis singled home two to give C of I the big lead.
It was enough for
Nichole Giesy and
Ali Longoria – as the tandem combined on a six-hitter, walking just two and striking out three.
C of I continues their road swing this weekend with weekend dates at Eastern Oregon.
