Boyd Dominant as Yotes Split Doubleheader with Corban

CALDWELL, Idaho – Riding an outstanding performance on the mound by Hunter Boyd and taking advantage of four Corban University errors, the College of Idaho earned a Game 2 win over the Warriors to split today's NAIA West Grouping doubleheader at Wolfe Field.

After Corban (17-12, 7-3 NAIA West) claimed a run-rule 13-3 victory in the opener, C of I scored five late inning runs to run away with a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

Boyd took a shutout into the ninth inning, working around six hits and striking out eight to pick up his second win of the season. His defense helped him, as the Yotes (10-19, 3-10) caught two Corban runners stealing and picked a third off second base.

The Yotes opened the scoring in the fourth, as Carter Vieira walked and Austin Van Horne reached on a bunt single. With one out, the duo stole second and third – with Vieira scoring on an infield single by Chase Labbe and Van Horne scoring when the throw to first went down the right field line.  A passed ball by the Warriors allowed Labbe to score to make it 3-0.

C of I extended the lead in the fifth on a Jon Gonzalez sacrifice fly, with Vieira adding a two-run single in the seventh to push the lead to 6-0.  The Yotes plated three in the eighth – taking advantage of two Corban errors – adding a RBI single from Jake Bowman and a Nick Mooney RBI fielders' choice.

The Warriors averted the shutout by scoring three in the ninth – including a Brock Myklebust two-run single.

Labbe had three hits in the win for C of I, with Bowman going 2-for-3. Starter Connor Mattison struck out eight in the loss for the Warriors.

In the opener, Kris Jackson tossed a complete game for Corban, as the Warriors erased an early C of I lead to claim the victory.

The Yotes led 2-0 after one inning – as a Labbe fielders' choice plated a run and Weston Miller lined an RBI single. However, the lead did not last, as the Warriors scored four in the second – including a two-run triple from Josh Ebert and added a two-run Jarrett Thoren double in the third to take a 6-2 lead.

Leading 8-3 in the seventh, the Warriors took advantage of three C of I hit by pitches and a pair of walks – batting around for five runs – with a bases-clearing double by Ben Ross giving the visitors the 10-run lead.

Jackson allowed just four hits and fanned six in registering his seventh win, with Thoren going 3-for-3 with two RBI and Ebert adding three RBI.

The teams close out the weekend series with a Sunday doubleheader at 11 a.m.
