CALDWELL, Idaho – Corban University turned four College of Idaho errors into five unearned runs in the opener and added 18 hits in the late game to sweep a doubleheader from the Yotes at Wolfe Field.
The visiting Warriors (19-12, 9-3 NAIA West) took 3-of-4 from their third-straight conference foe, claiming 6-2 and 10-2 victories.
The Oregon school turned an error and two balks in the second inning of Game 1 into an Andrew Axmaker sacrifice fly and a 1-0 lead, while two C of I (10-21, 3-12) errors in the fourth inning led to three runs for the visitors.
Trailing 5-0, C of I mounted a rally, as
Nate Hundley scored in the fifth while
Carter Vieira was caught in a run down, while an inning later,
Weston Miller capped a 12-pitch at bat with an RBI single to score
Chase Labbe from second. Unfortunately, the Yotes could not get closer.
Rilyn Lewchuk earned the win, working around six singles, adding four strikeouts, with Ethan Bragg going 2-for-3.
Niall Manning took the loss for the Yotes, allowing just one earned run in six innings, with
Dominic Conigliaro going 2-for-4.
Game 2 was all Corban from the outset – as the Warriors scored three in the first and added two in the second. Axmaker had an RBI double – part of a four-hit, four RBI game – in the first, while Daniel Freiburger lined an RBI triple in the second.
The Yotes plated their runs in the sixth and seventh innings – as
Johnny Hyland plated a run with an RBI ground out, while an infield single by
Keaton Elledge in the seventh scored Miller from third.
Corban starter Caleb Henry fanned five in eight innings of work for the victory, with Freiburger adding four hits and three RBI. Miller and Elledge each had two hits in the loss for C of I.
The Coyotes have their NAIA West bye next weekend, returning to the diamond a week from Tuesday, hosting Lewis-Clark State.
