Yotes Clinch PNCLL South Title, Stop Western 17-8

CALDWELL, Idaho – A six-goal surge between the first and second quarters built the College of Idaho an 8-3 lead, as the Yotes clinched the PNCLL South Division title with a 17-8 victory over Western Oregon at Symms Field.

The Coyotes (9-0, 3-0) ran their school-record win streak to nine games and secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PNCLL Championships. The win marked the first time C of I has defeated WOU, ending a string of 11-straight losses to the Wolves (3-7, 2-2).

Western grabbed a 3-2 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, before the Yotes took command. Dillon Green fed Nich Guzzetti for the tying goal; Jaden Carson scored on an unassisted strike; and just before the quarter horn, Tyler Sanchez drilled home a goal to give C of I a 5-3 lead.  Guzzetti, Carson and Rem Bauer each scored in the opening five minutes of the second period to push the margin to 8-3.

The visitors pulled within 9-6 early in the third quarter, but the trio of Guzzetti, Carson and Green each scored over a five minute period to extend the margin to six goals, as C of I broke the game wide open.

Carson had four goals to lead the Yotes, with Guzzetti adding three markers and Green scoring twice with two helpers.  Both Sanchez and Cory Brady each added two goals.

C of I will host Portland State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. – with the match-up serving as Senior Day for seven senior student-athletes.
