CALDWELL, Idaho –
Zach Draper tossed a complete game 5-hit shutout for College of Idaho in the opener, while Corban's Tony Davidson and Austin Holmes combined on a 10-hit shutout in Game 2, as the two NAIA West rivals split a doubleheader at Wolfe Field.
Cole Mansanarez provided all the offense in Game 1 with a seventh inning solo homer for the Coyotes (8-11, 1-1) in the 1-0 win, while the Warriors scored twice in both the seventh and eighth innings to secure a 5-0 victory in the late contest.
Draper was dominant, allowing just one runner in scoring position in the victory – retiring 16 of the final 17 batters he faced. The lefty equaled his career high with the 11 strikeouts in recording his second career complete game shutout.
C of I stranded runners in scoring position in the second and fourth, as Warriors (8-11, 2-4) starter Rilyn Lewchuk was equally impressive. However, Mansanarez launched a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall leading off the seventh for the lone run of the game.
Mananarez,
Dominic Conigliaro and
Sam Grise all had two hits for the Yotes, with Jackson Smith going 2-for-4 for the Warriors. Lewchuk fanned seven and allowed eight hits in the complete game losing effort.
Game 2 was paced by Davidson and Holmes – who did not walk or strike out a batter, and allowed 10 hits – but got 13 ground ball outs to earn the shutout win.
The Warriors struck for an unearned run in the second, as Ethan Bragg reached on an error and scored on a Zach Penrod sacrifice fly. The visitors would make it 3-0 in the seventh on a Tyler Reitz RBI single and a squeeze bunt from Josh Ebert. An inning later, Bragg hit his second homer of the season and Daniel Freiburger doubled in a run to cap the scoring.
The Yotes had their chances, as a runner was thrown out at the plate in the first, stranding runners in scoring position in three separate innings, while having a pair of runners picked off.
Reitz and Vince Gonzalez had two hits for Corban, while Congliaro was 3-for-4 and both Grise and
Johnny Hyland had two hits for C of I. Coyote starter
Anthony Martine allowed just two earned runs in seven innings, striking out nine, in the losing effort.
The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
