PHOENIX, Ariz. – Closing out the opening weekend of the 2017 baseball season, the College of Idaho split a doubleheader with Arizona Christian, losing the opener, 5-1, before taking a 5-2 decision in Game 2.
The Yotes (2-2) had eight hits in both games and added five stolen bases in the late contest to salvage the weekend split.
C of I jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in Game 1, as
Austin Van Horne lead off with a double and scored on a Firestorm (4-3) error. The lead would hold until the fifth, when Michael Dunnebacke lined a two-run, two-out single. ACU added three insurance runs in the eighth – as Chance Randall roped an RBI single and Jacob Rodriguez lined a two-run homer.
Bobby Wright went four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four in a no-decision for C of I. Van Horne had two doubles and
Dominic Conigliaro had two singles in the loss.
The Coyotes scored five runs in the first three innings of Game 2 and rode the arms of
Anthony Martine and Van Horne to the win.
C of I plated three runs in the second inning – scoring two runs on an ACU throwing error and adding another on a
Johnny Hyland RBI single. An inning later, the Yotes made it 5-0 as
Sam Grise scored on a wild pitch and Hyland followed with an RBI knock.
Martine went four strong innings in his C of I debut, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and striking out four, with Van Horne working around a walk and two singles to pick up the three inning save.
Devon Pogue and Hyland each went 2-for-3 in the victory for the Yotes.
C of I returns to action next weekend with a four-game series vs. William Jessup.
