CALDWELL, Idaho – A season-high nine strikeouts from
Cortni Pena and three hits from
Destiny Turner were not enough for the College of Idaho, as the Lady Yotes dropped a doubleheader to Northwest University at Symms Field.
The Eagles (11-23, 6-16 CCC), who began the day in the cellar of the Cascade Conference West Division, hit two solo homers in a 2-1 Game 1 win, while taking advantage of five C of I errors in an 11-2 Game 2 triumph.
Pena dominated the NU batters in Game 1, allowing just four hits and an intentional walk – but long balls from Savannah Rush in the second and Ricki Tacdol in the seventh – were the difference.
Kelli Packham stymied the C of I bats throughout, limiting the Lady Yotes (12-19-1, 6-14) to four singles and struck out five for the victory. The Yotes tied the score in the fifth after
Delaney Atkins reached on an error and scored on a two-out RBI single from
Kristin Paulazzo.
Neither team had a multi-hit game in Game 1.
Both Rush and Tacdol were the story in Game 2, each recording a pair of hits and three RBI in the victory for the Eagles.
Darian Godfrey lined an RBI single in the second, just inside the third base bag, to stake NU to a 1-0 lead. The Eagles would extend the lead to 4-0 in the fourth – scoring three runs on just one hit, a bunt single by Aubree Slocum – but capitalized on a pair of costly Coyote errors.
Katie Rowe got the Yotes a run back in the bottom of the inning with a long solo homer to left, but NU scored an unearned run in the fifth; added a Rush RBI single in the sixth; and batted around for five runs in the seventh, including a two-run single by Rush and a two-run double from Tacdol to put the game away.
Hannah Yelas worked around seven hits – including a seventh inning solo homer by the Yotes
Katelyn Geyer – to record the complete game win. Slocum and Godfrey both had two hits for NU in the victory, with Turner going 2-for-4 with her 12th double of the season in the loss for the Yotes.
C of I returns to action tomorrow morning, hosting British Columbia in an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
