Coyotes Split Doubleheader With Puget Sound

CALDWELL, Idaho – Jake Bowman had four hits and Hunter Hanson added a two-run homer and three RBI in Game 2, as the College of Idaho split a doubleheader with the University of Puget Sound at Wolfe Field.

The Yotes (9-1) saw their 8-game win streak to open the season snapped as the Loggers won the opener, 9-5, before responding with a 6-run seventh inning to win the nightcap, 12-1.

In Game 1, the Coyotes grabbed an early 2-0 lead – as Bobby Wright stole home part of a double steal in the second and Mitch Skaggs singled home a run in the third.

UPS (2-4) took control of the game in the fourth as a two-run single by James DeJesus was the big blow in the 5-run fourth.  C of I got within 6-5 in the sixth after a 2-run Cole Mansanerez double, but a Nick Funyak put the game away with an RBI ground out in the seventh and an RBI single in the ninth.

E.R. Crispell got the win for the Loggers, allowing three runs and striking out five in five innings, with Joshua Zavisbuin picking up a four inning save.  Chris Zerio was 3-for-4 in the 12-hit UPS attack.

Mansanerez was 3-for-5 for the Yotes, who stranded 10 men.

C of I never trailed in Game 2 – getting a first inning Skaggs sacrifice fly and tallying a second run an inning later on a UPS error.  The Yotes made it 4-0 in the fifth on a Skaggs sacrifice fly and a Devon Pogue single, extending the margin to 6-1 in the sixth on Hanson's second home run of the year.

In the seventh, the Coyotes sent 11 men to the plate – with 2-run singles from Bowman and Nate Hundley keying the big rally.

Dalton Ridgway locked down his second win of 2016, allowing a run on four hits in four innings of relief, with starter Mason Stidham tossing four innings of four-hit ball. Bowman was 4-for-5 and both Mansanerez and Pogue each went 3-for-4 in the win.

Funyak was 3-for-3 in the loss for the Loggers.

The rubber game of the series is tomorrow at 11 a.m.
