Late Penalty Helps Western Past Upset-Minded Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho – Western Oregon scored four goals in a key 90 second fourth quarter man-advantage, lifting the No. 20 ranked Wolves to a 14-9 victory over upset-minded College of Idaho at Symms Field.

WOU (8-4, 3-0 PNCLL South) held a slim 8-6 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the match, when the Yotes were whistled for a 30 second technical foul for pushing.  However, C of I was subsequently assessed a one minute non-releasable personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the Wolves taking full advantage – as Brandon Determan scored two of his four goals during the penalty time, with Tyson Ticknor and John Diehl scoring goals, as the lead ballooned to 12-6.

Western opened the game on a four-goal run, as Determan and Dange Wolf scored two goals apiece in the opening nine minutes.  The Yotes (5-3, 3-2) slowly battled back, cutting the gap to 6-4 on a Patrick Erstad goal just before halftime.

C of I looked to have tied the score at 6-6 midway through the third quarter, but the equalizing goal was waved off for a crease violation.  A Nich Guzzetti goal just before the end of the period made it 7-6, but the Coyotes could not get closer.

Wolf had five goals and two assists and Determan added four goals and two assists for WOU, with goalie Lake Larson making 13 saves.

Guzzetti, Korey Gambill, Ian Williams, and Dillon Green all had two goals for C of I, who close out the regular-season next weekend with home matches vs. Great Falls and Pacific Lutheran.
