LA MIRADA, Calif. – Day 2 of the Red Lion-Anaheim Summer Slam was a tough one for the College of Idaho volleyball team, as the Lady Yotes dropped a pair of matches to quality opponents.

The No. 18 ranked Lady Yotes (1-3) dropped a tough five-set decision to Cal State San Marcos before losing a three-set match against No. 17 Rocky Mountain.

Cal State San Marcos 3, College of Idaho 2 (22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 15-12) – Hitting errors were the story late in the match, as 14 miscues by C of I allowed the Cougars to earn the victory.

The Yotes used a 6-2 surge late in Set 3 to earn a two sets to one edge, but watched as CSUSM cruised to a Set 4 win.  In the deciding set, the teams were deadlocked at 3-3, before one of Kelli McLin's 12 kills capped a 4-0 run by the Cougars, with the NAIA independent never trailing again.

Emily Ottinger led C of I with 19 kills, nine digs, and three blocks, with Abbey Fenton recording 12 kills and four blocks.  Both Kylie Porter and Katy Robinson had nine kills; Jenessa Koelliker had eight kills and five blocks; Sierra Porter recorded 50 assists; and Cheyan Coburn had a career-high 28 digs.

Rocky Mountain 3, College of Idaho 0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-19) – Yang Yang had 12 kills and five blocks in leading the Bears to their second-straight win over the Yotes.

Yang was the key in the first set, recording six kills, including two in an 8-0 RMC run that broke open a close game.  Set 2 saw the Yotes hold an 8-7 lead, but a six-point surge by Rocky broke the set open, while the Bears opened an 8-1 lead in Set 3 to roll to the win.

Fenton led the Yotes with eight kills, with three others recording seven spikes.  Sierra Porter recorded her first double-double of the season with 27 assists and 10 digs, with junior Kathyn Nasburg recording a career-high 15 digs in the loss.

C of I returns to action next Friday with a road tilt at rival Northwest Nazarene.
