Southern Oregon Ends C of I's Home Streak at 73

Box Score

CALDWELL, Idaho – Mona Goudarzian had a match-high 19 kills, helping Southern Oregon end College of Idaho's record-setting 73-match Cascade Conference home win streak, topping the Yotes 26-24, 18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 17-15, inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

Tied 15-15 in Set 5, a blocking error by the Lady Yotes (7-6, 4-2 CCC) gave SOU a third match point, with Sam Boehnke lining a serve that caught the end line for an ace to win the match.

The win was the first by a C of I conference opponent inside the Activities Center since SOU defeated the Yotes in three sets on Sept. 16, 2005.

The Coyotes jumped out to a 21-15 lead in Set 1 – including three kills each from Liz Myers, Kylee Nawahine, and Sofia Anxo, but the Raiders (7-6, 4-2) used a five-point surge on Paulla Pinheiro's serve to get within 22-21. After ties at 23-23 and 24-24, Goudarzian put away a high ball to give SOU the lead, with a C of I hitting error giving the Raiders the set win.

Set 2 belonged to C of I – as the Yotes took advantage of six SOU hitting errors to grab a 7-2 lead. After the Raiders cut the margin to 10-9, three-straight Lili Brochado kills gave the Yotes breathing room and cruised the rest of the way to even the match.

Three early Emma Gasman kills helped the Raiders to a 10-4 lead in Set 3, with SOU holding the lead at 19-13 before a late C of I surge. Sierra Porter had a trio of kills to get the hosts as close as 21-20, before back-to-back Pinheiro kills gave Southern the edge they needed.

The Raiders looked to end the match in the fourth set, as a Gasman kill gave the visitors a 12-6 lead. The Yotes responded with a 7-1 push, including a pair of Kylie Porter blocks, to even the frame at 13-13. Tied at 20-20, a Brochado kill, a SOU hitting error, and a stuff block from Anxo helped the Yotes take the set to force the run to 15.

In the finale, the Yotes only lead was on the opening point, as SOU jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the strength of two Gasman kills. C of I would rally to tie the score six times – staving off match two match points on Myers kills with the score 14-13 and 15-14. However, Myers was whistled for a controversial blocking error to give SOU their third match point – with Boenhke's ace giving the Raiders the road win.

Pinheiro had 16 kills and 13 digs in the win for Southern, with Gasman recording 14 kills and four blocks. Lauren McGowne had 55 kills and 10 digs, with Renee Yomtob leading the Raiders with 26 digs. SOU had a 63-62 edge in total kills and a 82-77 edge in digs.

Anxo led four C of I players with double-digit kills with 16, with Myers adding 14 kills and three blocks. Brochado had 13 kills, Nawahine had 11 kills and 14 digs, Sierra Porter had 55 assists, and Janel Porter added 32 digs.

The Yotes return to action tomorrow, meeting Oregon Tech at 7 p.m.
