LA GRANDE, Ore. - The College of Idaho won the opening set but could not hold off unbeaten Eastern Oregon, falling 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-8 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match Wednesday night at Quinn Coliseum.
The Yotes' first-set win was the first set Eastern Oregon had dropped at home this season. The loss was the Yotes' first in conference play and drops them one match behind Eastern Oregon in the CCC.
CI trailed for most of the first set. Eastern Oregon scored the first four points and led 6-2 and 15-12 before the Yotes pulled even at 17. Alexa Wheeler tied it at 20, and the Yotes scored five of the final six points to take their first lead and the set. Kelsy Stanger had two kills in that stretch, Abigail Flerchinger and Cierra Bohrn teamed on a block for a 22-20 lead, and Flerchinger put down the kill for set point.
The Yotes led the second set 6-3 and were still within 19-18 before Eastern Oregon scored five straight, including back-to-back kills by Stella Koch, to reach set point at 24-18. CI saved two set points before Brooke Womack closed it.
The third set was tied at 7 before Eastern Oregon pulled away with nine consecutive points, from 10-9 to 19-9. The Yotes answered with four straight but got no closer than 13-19. Eastern Oregon opened the fourth on a 5-0 run, led 14-3 and never let CI back in.
Eastern Oregon hit .326 to CI's .103 and held advantages of 7.0-3.0 in blocks and 9-4 in aces. The Yotes hit .192 and .200 in the first two sets, then .029 and -.059 in the last two.
Wheeler led CI with 11 kills on .409 hitting. Jessica Stires and Stanger added eight kills each. Shaynee McWilliams had 29 assists and seven digs, Avery Lewis had 17 digs and Kadence Boyd added 11.
Keira Vaughn led Eastern Oregon with 16 kills. Womack had 12 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, and Akylah Kaino added 11 kills on .321 hitting. Kate Stidham had 26 assists and 17 digs, Ava Semprimoznik added 19 assists, and Jaycee Villastrigo served six aces. Jule Whitley had four blocks.
CI falls to 15-1 overall and 8-1 in the CCC. Eastern Oregon improves to 20-0 and 9-0.
