ASHLAND, Ore. - For the first time in program history, The College of Idaho has won back-to-back regular-season match-ups at Southern Oregon, as the Lady Yotes claimed a 19-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 victory inside Riehm Arena.
Emily Ottinger had a career-high 21 kills in the win for the Yotes (14-9, 14-2 CCC), who can claim a share of their eighth-straight Cascade Conference regular-season crown with a win in their next two matches, and win the title outright with two wins - thanks to an Oregon Tech victory over Eastern Oregon.
In the over 30 year history of the program, the Yotes had claimed regular-season wins at SOU in 2003, 2006, and 2012 - with the only back-to-back wins coming in the 2005 CCC Tournament and the 2006 regular-season.
SOU (15-8, 12-4) won the opening set, getting two kills each from Mona Goudarzian and Emma Gasman in a 9-3 surge that broke a 15-15 tie. C of I evened the match with two big runs in Set 2 - getting two Kylee Nawahine kills in a 6-0 push to give the Yotes a 11-7 lead, then getting two aces from Elizabeth Trenkel in a six-point run that ballooned the lead to 20-12.
Set 3 saw the Raiders grab a 12-10 lead on a Coyote service error, but C of I rallied, as Ottinger hammered down three kills in a decisive 9-1 run to give the Yotes the two sets to one advantage. Ottinger helped the Yotes end the match in Set 4, recording four kills in a 14-3 run that erased an 11-10 Southern lead to stun a crowd of 767.
Liz Myers had 11 kills and seven blocks and Kylee Nawahine had 11 kills and 10 digs for C of I. Sierra Porter recorded 44 assists and 11 digs, with Janel Porter recording 21 digs.
Gourdazian led SOU with 17 kills and Paulla Pinheiro had 16 kills in the loss for Southern, who had an eight-match win streak snapped. Lauren McGowne had 45 assists and Renee Yomtob had 33 digs in the loss.
C of I returns home to close out the 2013 regular-season with weekend matches against Northwest Christian and Corban.
