DILLON, Mont. — A furious fourth-quarter comeback came up just short for the (RV) College of Idaho women's basketball team, as the Yotes dropped a 78-75 heartbreaker to Montana Western on Saturday afternoon. Anna Mooney's game tying three point attempt came up just short at the buzzer.
Trailing by nine entering the final period, the Yotes (0-2) outscored the Bulldogs 26-21 in the fourth and had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds. Anna Mooney drilled a clutch three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two, and after a quick layup by Taryn Riley made it 76-75, Montana Western iced the game with two free throws in the final three seconds.
Mooney led The College of Idaho with 21 points, hitting 7-of-15 from the field and 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. Mia Austin added 13 points off the bench, while Kylie Waltermeyer chipped in 10 points and two steals. The Yotes knocked down 14 three-pointers and outrebounded the Bulldogs 41-34, including 17 offensive boards.
Despite shooting just 39.1 percent from the field, The College of Idaho stayed in the game with hustle plays and timely shooting. The Yotes forced 13 turnovers and scored 15 points off those takeaways, while also getting 26 points from their bench.
Montana Western (2-0) was led by Isabella Lund's 17 points and Ava Bellach's 13. The Bulldogs shot 48.2 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range.
The Yotes will look to bounce back on November 13 when they travel to Riverside, California, to face La Sierra University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MT.
