CALDWELL, Idaho — The College of Idaho men's soccer team opened Cascade Collegiate Conference play with a thrilling 6-3 victory over Northwest University on Friday evening at Simplot Stadium.
The Yotes got on the board early with Eric Hornung scoring the first goal in the 11th minute, assisted by Hugo Guevara. Just five minutes later, Dani Alejos doubled the lead with help from Jorge Fernandez. Northwest responded with a goal from Andre Santos in the 19th minute, but Alejos added his second goal of the match in the 24th minute, assisted by Luke Quinn. Hornung quickly followed with another goal in the 26th minute, assisted by Keidin Green, putting the Yotes up 4-1.
Northwest cut the deficit before halftime with a goal by Elliot Misic in the 32nd minute. After a scoreless second half, Misic struck again in the 78th minute, bringing Northwest within a goal. However, Hugo Gutierrez extended the Yotes' lead in the 81st minute, assisted by Hornung, and Green sealed the victory in the 89th minute, assisted by Gutierrez.
College of Idaho goalkeeper Ben Anderson made four saves, while Northwest's Michael Kot tallied 10 saves as the Yotes outshot the Eagles 26-9.
With the win, the Yotes improve to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They return to action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. when they face The Evergreen State College at Simplot Stadium.
