NAMPA, Idaho - The windy conditions at Vail Field proved to be a key factor in a doubleheader sweep for local rival Northwest Nazarene over College of Idaho on Saturday.
Game one saw NNU pitching limit College of Idaho to just two hits and the Nighthawks score eight runs on 10 hits en route to an 8-1 win.
The Nighthawks plated the first three runs of the game in the first on a three-run home run by Kaleb Karpstein. A RBI single in the second by the Yotes'
Darren Smith cut the deficit to one but a solo home run with the Nighthawks stretched the lead back to four.
NNU added to its lead with two runs in the fourth and sixth inning in the win.
Smith and
Kris Kirkpatrick each had a hit in the loss for the Yotes, whereas NNU was paced by the three-hit day by Trevor Tishenkel, who had a solo home run in the second inning. Carter Walsh and Drew Deal each had two hits in the win.
Nighthawks starter Kailer Saunders pitched 7.1 innings of two-hit baseball with 11 strikeouts in the win.
NNU plated a pair of unearned runs in the second inning which proved to be just enough for a 2-1 win over the Yotes in the nightcap. Danner had two hits, including a solo home run as College of Idaho was limited to just three hits in a 2-1 loss in the nightcap.
A pair of College of Idaho pitchers –
Oliver Massie and
Jacob Lewis – each went four innings in the contest. Massie allowed three hits, struck out three and two unearned runs, Lewis out of the bullpen allowed just two hits.
Down a run, the Yotes had the tying run aboard in three of the innings unable to plate the tying run in the loss.
Next, C of I will welcome Lewis-Clark State to Caldwell for a four-game non-conference series. The action gets underway on Friday at 2 p.m. at Wolfe Field.
