Lewis-Clark State erased an early 2-0 deficit, plating 15 runs over the final six innings en route to a 15-6 win over host College of Idaho in the series opener on Friday afternoon.
College of Idaho had nine hits – two each from
Alex McFarland-Smith and
Jack Ingraham in the loss. McFarland-Smith and
Kris Kirkpatrick each drove in a pair. The loss drops College of Idaho to 6-9 on
the season.
The Warriors' Jake Gish and Brandon Cabrera each had three hits in the win. Two of the hits for Gish were home runs as the Warriors pounded out 15 hits and overcame four errors.
A RBI single by McFarland-Smith in the first and a RBI double by Ingraham put the home team ahead 2-0. Then, the Warriors got on the scoreboard on a sac fly by Gish to put up its first run of the day in the fourth. In the Yotes half of the fourth, they plated an unearned run on a balk to make it a 3-1 contest.
The two teams each plated a run in the fifth before LC State took control of the contest with a four-run seventh, one run in the eighth and a seven run ninth inning before College of Idaho got back on the scoreboard with a pair of in the bottom of the ninth. As the Warriors took the lead, it was a solo home run in the sixth for Gish and another solo shot in the ninth.
Neither starting pitcher was involved in the decision. The Warriors' Cameron Smith pitched the final four innings of the game for his first win of the season. He allowed three hits, two runs – both earned – and struck out five. For College of Idaho, Carlos Campa in the seventh allowed three unearned runs in the sin a losing effort to fall to 0-1.
The non-conference series will resume on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Wolfe Field.
