CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho baseball team dropped a pair of tightly-contested matchups to local rival NNU in a doubleheader on Friday. The rivals from Nampa swept the twinbill with a 3-1 win in game one and 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Game one saw a pitchers dual settled late in the contest. After a scoreless first seven innings, NNU plated three runs on reliever
Dawson Cummins, who entered the game after a solid seven inning and eight-strikeout effort from starter
Nick Eliason. The Nighthawks plated three runs on two hits for the 3-0 lead. A RBI single by
Austin Moon in the bottom of the ninth spoiled the shutout bid. Offensively for C of I,
Darren Smith had two of the six hits for the Yotes, who left eight runners on base.
Game two saw College of Idaho holding a 4-3 lead before the Nighthawks managed to tie it in the ninth and push across the winning run in the 10
th after a one out solo home run by Casillas. The Yotes had the tying run on third before a ground out ended the contest.
Offensively, the Yotes offense had nine hits – three from the bat of
Kris Kirkpatrick, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Leadoff batter
Ben Gaff also had two hits to go along with two runs scored.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday in Nampa. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
