Local Rival NNU Takes Two from College of Idaho

CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho baseball team dropped a pair of tightly-contested matchups to local rival NNU in a doubleheader on Friday. The rivals from Nampa swept the twinbill with a 3-1 win in game one and 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Game one saw a pitchers dual settled late in the contest. After a scoreless first seven innings, NNU plated three runs on reliever Dawson Cummins, who entered the game after a solid seven inning and eight-strikeout effort from starter Nick Eliason. The Nighthawks plated three runs on two hits for the 3-0 lead. A RBI single by Austin Moon in the bottom of the ninth spoiled the shutout bid. Offensively for C of I, Darren Smith had two of the six hits for the Yotes, who left eight runners on base.

Game two saw College of Idaho holding a 4-3 lead before the Nighthawks managed to tie it in the ninth and push across the winning run in the 10th after a one out solo home run by Casillas. The Yotes had the tying run on third before a ground out ended the contest.

Offensively, the Yotes offense had nine hits – three from the bat of Kris Kirkpatrick, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Leadoff batter Ben Gaff also had two hits to go along with two runs scored.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday in Nampa. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
