CALDWELL, Idaho – Three College of Idaho women's track and field student-athletes -
Sage Martin (Meridian, Idaho),
Abbey Shirts (Weiser, Idaho) and
Ellyse Tingelstad (Joseph, Ore.) - have been recognized by College Sports Communicators as Academic All-American®. Martin and Shirts were selected to the first team and Tingelstad was named to the second team.
The 2023 Academic All-American® Track & Field Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
At the recent 2023 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, all three represented College of Idaho with Martin and Tingelstad each earning All-American honors in a pair of events to lead College of Idaho to a share of eighth-place honors as a team.
Martin won the 3000m steeplechase at last week's NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a PR of 10:17.90 and later in the day, she picked up her second All-American honor with an eighth-place finish in the 5000. Prior to that, Martin won the Cascade Collegiate Conference title in the 3000m steeplechase and was fourth in the 5000. Along with Shirts and Figueira, she earned All-American honors as a member of the DMR and individually, she was fifth at the 2023 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the mile with a PR of 4:55.11.
Shirts picked up All-American honors last week in the 1500m run. At the 2023 CCC Championships, she won the 800, was second in the 1500 and member of the sixth place 4x400m relay. Shirts also earned All-American honors on the indoor circuit with a fourth-place finish in the 10000 and along with Martin, Figueira in the DMR. In cross country, she was 28th in a 5K PR at the 2022 NAIA Cross Country Championships and third at the 2022 CCC Cross Country Championships.
Tingelstad ran to All-American honors in the 10,000 and in the 5000, last week. She was second in the 10,000 and third in the 5000 after winning the 10k and third in the 5k at the 2023 CCC Track and Field Championships. Tingelstad just missed All-American honors with a ninth-place finish at the 2023 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 3000. She was 24th at the 2022 NAIA Cross Country Championships and won her second-straight conference title at the Collegiate Conference Cross Country Championships.
The three Academic All-American honors are the sixth, seventh and eighth Academic All-American honors in program history. For 2022-23, College of Idaho has had a school record 10 individuals earn Academic All-American honors.
