Yotes Baseball Takes Down NNU to Open the Weekend

NAMPA, Idaho - The College of Idaho baseball team continues their red hot start to 2023, taking down cross town rival in Northwest Nazarene by a score of 5-1.

The Yotes offense got on the board early as Alex McFarland-Smith singled up the middle, scoring Jonah Hultberg to take a quick one run lead in the first inning. In the second, Jordan Kelly blasted his first homerun as a Yote as the team took a 2-0 lead early, holding it until late in the game.

In the eighth inning, Jake Denison drove in a run on a groundout which scored Ben Gaff, giving the Yotes a 3-0 lead. NNU was finally able to drive across a run in the bottom half of the inning, as Colby Moran drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Yotes offense got right back to work in the top of the ninth, scoring twice on a McFarland-Smith double and a Ben Gaff single, giving the squad the 5-1 lead which would hold to be the final. The College of Idaho would go on to outhit the Nighthawks 13-4.

Nate Vidlak got the start on the mound, going four strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Nick Eliason got his first win of the year, going three innings in relief while not allowing a hit and striking out four Nighthawk batters. Colby Durski earned the save, going two innings while only allowing one hit and striking out a batter.

The Yotes and Nighthawks will be back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Nampa.
