No. 17 Southern Oregon shot 41.1% from the field and landed a pair of players – Brianna Phiakhamngon and Clara Robbins – in double figures as they led nearly from start to finish in a 60-48 win over College of Idaho in the CCC opener. Phiakhamngon scored a game-high 24 and Robbins added 12.
Southern Oregon (5-1, 1-0 CCC) outrebounded the Yotes and led for 35 minutes in the win. The Yotes (5-2, 0-1 CCC) were led by a 14-point effort from
Sienna Riggle. Plus,
Taryn Riley added eight and reserve
Averee Porter (pictured) provided a season-high seven. The reserves for College of Idaho outscored the Raiders, 14-3 in the loss.
Despite an early 10-2 deficit, College of Idaho came back with a 9-2 spurt later in the quarter to get the deficit down to one, 12-11 when Porter made a layup with 4:09 left in the first quarter. The Yotes scored six of the first eight points of the second quarter to tie the game at 24 when
Lexi Mitchell made a layup with 8:15 left in the half. Riggle put the Yotes ahead for the first time on the night when she made one of two free throws with 5:42 to go in the first 20 minutes. However, a 9-2 run by the visiting Raiders put the visitors ahead for the remainder of the contest.
Another late charge by College of Idaho saw the Yotes start the fourth quarter get the deficit to as little as four, 50-46, with a
Riley Frith steal and
Taryn Riley layup with 6:34 left to go in the contest. The Raiders ended the game on a 9-2 run to close the game and end the comeback hopes for the host Yotes.
Next, College of Idaho will face Oregon Tech on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip in the J.A. Albertson Activity Center.
