CALDWELL, Idaho - A pair of first half goals would be just enough for the College of Idaho to upset No. 23 Corban 2-1 in the Yote's home opener at Simplot Stadium.
Â
The Yotes (4-1, 2-1 CCC) snapped a six-game losing streak to Corban and get their first win against a NAIA ranked opponent since 2014.
Â
The hosts narrowly missed a chance in the third minute, as after a defensive miscue, but
Joao Bastos was turned away on a 1-v-1 attempt by Warriors (3-3, 2-1) keeper Justin Keegan.
Â
C of I capitalized in the 23rd minute – as following a free kick awarded from a Corban caution, a cross from
Emil Powles found
Andy Sanchez's head in front of goal to get his first goal of the season.
Â
The home side would double the lead four minutes later, with
Kristian Quiros firing a left-footed 25-yard one-timer to put the Yotes up 2-0.
Â
The Warriors looked to respond early in the second half, but C of I keeper
Zac Dean made three saves in the 50th minute to keep the away side at bay.
Â
Corban continued the attack, taking 12 of their 15 shots in the second half, breaking through in the 79th minute with a slotted ball from Alvaro Alche. The Warriors had a final chance to tie the score inside the final 20 seconds, but a Irwin Leon 25-yard free kick missed high.
Â
The visitors held a 15-9 edge in shots, with both Dean and Keegan each recording five saves. The physical contest featured 30 total fouls and four cautions.
Â
The Yotes are back at it at home tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Bushnell.
